Microsoft Office 15 apps to include ‘touch mode’

The coming Office 15 client apps all seem to be getting a new ‘touch mode’ button that will enable them to work better on touch-centric devices.

It looks like Office 15 client apps are going to get more touchy, but in a way that won’t force touch on users who don’t want or need it.

One of the big questions many Microsoft watchers have had is how Microsoft plans to make its next-generation Office client apps more touch-friendly, so that they’ll be optimized to work on tablets and PCs running the touch-optimized Windows 8 operating system. Microsoft officials already shared that the four Office 15 apps that will be “included” on Windows 8 on ARM (WOA) tablets will be Desktop apps, not WinRT-based Metro-Style apps. So how will Microsoft make these versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote work better with touch than their current-generation counterparts? Read more »

No Metro Design for Microsoft Office 2012 on Windows 8?

Office 2012 will be Windows 8 friendly, but its individual apps will not be designed with the Metro sleekness.

ZoomOn the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that the “Office 2012″ Technical Preview Program had begun, a new report (rumor) has surfaced stemming from “Microsoft insiders” who claim the suite won’t be built for the Metro-style interface using the new WinRT programming model. Instead, it will receive interface tweaks to make it more touch friendly within the Windows 8 environment.

Plans to create a true Metro style Windows 8 version of Office 2012 have reportedly been pushed back. The reason is that the team would need to completely overhaul the suite to take advantage of WinRT. That means an additional amount of time, thus pushing the Office 2012 release back. Instead of a product delay, Microsoft will likely return to the Metro-themed version once the retail product hits the market. Read more »

From Windows to Office, cloud and server applications, and maybe a Metro-inspired dance remix on YouTube, Microsoft’s next-generation user interface will be everywhere by Windows 8’s launch.

Windows Phone-inspired, the Start ’screen’ will replace the traditional Start menu, and will be the front-facing end of the next-generation operating system, Windows 8.

Pinching the user interface from existing Windows Phone 7 devices, in which the thin fonts and the application tiles reign free from the rest of the desktop, evolutionarily speaking it is truly a feat of ingenious for the mobile space.

But can Microsoft pull off the Start screen for desktops, and can Metro be successfully transposed to the desktop? Read more »
