Most of the attention on Redmond this year is focused on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. But, the next generation of Microsoft Office is also currently under development–ostensibly to be launched along side Windows 8 this fall–and Office 15 has the potential to be the real hero among the two.

Microsoft has made a number of major changes to the latest version of Windows—not the least of which are the touchscreen optimized Metro interface, and adding ARM-based tablets as an option. But, as the de facto productivity suite for businesses, Microsoft Office is the standard bearer of the Microsoft Windows operating system and Office 15 has the power to drive adoption of Windows 8 by taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the new OS. Whatever happened to the Microsoft Office 2012 Moorea app?

One of the first new tidbits to leak months ago about Microsoft’s Office 15 suite was the existence of what looked to be a new app, codenamed Moorea. Now that the Office 15 technology preview is available — albeit primarily to testers under non-disclosure agreements — is there any new word on Moorea?

There is, in fact. But from what I’m hearing, Moorea is not looking like it will be a new, standalone addition to the coming Office suite. Instead, it seems to have been folded into OneNote 15. (If you want more information on OneNote 15 — and other components of the Office 2012 client suite, Windows SuperSite’s Paul Thurrott has gotten his hands on the Office 15 technical preview bits.)  Microsoft, together with West Coast Customs, have put together an unusual creation: A 2012 Ford Mustang, albeit with a 1967 replica body in a matte black finish, and as much Microsoft-powered tech as possible.

“Project Detroit,” as it’s called, will be formally unveiled on Discovery’s Velocity Network this Sunday, March 25 at 9pm PT/ET. But Jeff Sanquist and Tim O’Brien of Microsoft’s Channel 9 have already posted many of the details.

Let’s start with when you first approach the car, where Windows Phone integration lets you find, unlock, and start the car via a Viper-developed Smart Start app. The car comes with 4G and a hotspot mode (no carrier listed yet) that gives multiple devices Wi-Fi access on the go. The 4G network connects to Bing Maps, Read more »

Windows 8 update: Dell thinks it can sell Windows 8 tablets

Dell’s Chief Commercial Officer Steve Felice told Reuters this week that he thinks disaffection with iPads by corporate IT departments creates an opportunity to sell mobile devices that run on Windows – something they are familiar with.

“On the commercial side there are a lot of concerns about security, interoperability, systems and device management, and I think Dell is in the best position to meet those,” Felice saiys.

In addition to taking a run at Windows 8 Dell may also fire up its Android tablets again, but that is to be seen. “We have a roadmap for tablets that we haven’t announced yet,” he says. “You’ll see some announcements…for the back half of the year. We don’t think that this market is closed off in any way.” Read more »

Microsoft Office 15 apps to include ‘touch mode’

By admin, February 28, 2012

The coming Office 15 client apps all seem to be getting a new ‘touch mode’ button that will enable them to work better on touch-centric devices.

It looks like Office 15 client apps are going to get more touchy, but in a way that won’t force touch on users who don’t want or need it.

One of the big questions many Microsoft watchers have had is how Microsoft plans to make its next-generation Office client apps more touch-friendly, so that they’ll be optimized to work on tablets and PCs running the touch-optimized Windows 8 operating system. Microsoft officials already shared that the four Office 15 apps that will be “included” on Windows 8 on ARM (WOA) tablets will be Desktop apps, not WinRT-based Metro-Style apps. So how will Microsoft make these versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote work better with touch than their current-generation counterparts? Read more »
