Hewlett-Packard launches the TouchPad this week, but expect the company to build Windows 8 tablets once it ships next year.

Fast Company asked HP’s PC boss Phil McKinney if they’d ship a Windows 8 tablet. He said he couldn’t say much, but that HP is working very closely with Microsoft on Windows 8. Then he flashed a big grin.

Developer relations head Richard Kerris was vaguer, but admitted Windows 8 tablets are a possibility if customers demand it. Read more »

With a four-minute, 30-second sneak peek in early June, Microsoft whipped what had been passing industry-wide interest in the next version of Windows up to a fever pitch.

Microsoft had been so secretive about the OS until that point that the company wouldn’t confirm “Windows 8″ as the code name, not even after CEO Steve Ballmer referred to the OS as Windows 8 in a speech. Read more »

Next version of Office coming at end of 2012

DelBene also indicated that businesses should expect the next version of Office to start selling at the end of 2012.

“We’re typically in a 2 1/2 year cycle,” DelBene said Tuesday. Office 2010 started selling in June 2010, so that would make the next version of Office ready around December 2012.

The new cloud service Office 365 will get quarterly software updates. Unlike most online banking websites, Office 365 will not go down for hours at a time for the software upgrade. “That’s maddening,” DelBene said. Read more »
