Touch technologies are advancing across the Microsoft product lines, in everything from Office 2012, to Surface 2.0, to Windows 8.

Here’s a round-up of some recent touch-centric Microsoft tidbits:

Radial menus revisited: After The Verge recently wrote about Office 2012 possibly adopting a new touch-friendly “radial menu” concept, Microsoft watchers have been rifling through videos and docs trying to figure out exactly what this might be. My new favorite educated guess comes from reader @mcakins, who points out that the InkSeine project from Microsoft Research includes a mention of radial menus. Read more »

Microsoft Office 2012 Begins Technical Preview: Tablet Readiness Questioned

A handful of tight-lipped customers are getting their eyes on Microsoft Office 15 for the first time, as the software enters its Technical Preview phrase.

During the Technical Preview, Microsoft gets feedback from a select group of customers, who are bound to non-disclosure agreements. That allows Microsoft to test the software without revealing features or other details to the public.

A public beta for Microsoft Office 15–a codename for what will likely become Office 2012 or Office 2013–is scheduled for this summer. No word yet on a release date. Read more »

Microsoft Office 2012 Beta Slated for Summer, Time to Move to Office 2010

Microsoft has launched the community technical preview (CTP) for Office 2012 to a limited audience, with a public beta planned for summer of 2012. With what will likely end up being Office 2013 looming on the horizon, it’s time for those still using Office 2007 to migrate to Office 2010.

At this point, we know very little about what Office 2012 will bring to the table. A post on Microsoft’s Office Exec blog by PJ Hough, CVP of development for Microsoft Office, declares, “At this early point in our development cycle, I’m not able to share too much about Office 2012, but I can tell you Office 2012 is the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division.”

What we do know is that Windows 8 is imminent, and that Windows 8 is built on a new Metro interface, and will run on tablets including those built on ARM processors. My PCWorld peer Jared Newman points out, “Office 2012 is also expected to have some Metro-style enhancements for Windows 8 tablets, but Microsoft hasn’t commented on that, nor has the company said whether Office 2012 will support Windows 8 on ARM devices.” Read more »

Microsoft sets Office 2012 public beta for summer 2012

Microsoft today announced it has kicked off a “technical preview” of the next version of its money-making Office suite and promised a public beta will ship this summer.

The move is a repeat of the route Microsoft took with Office 2010, which was distributed to a select group of testers as a technical preview in July 2009.

Microsoft said little about “Office 2012,” the code name for the product, and nothing about its Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint applications in a blog post Monday that announced the preview.

“I’m not able to share too much about Office 2012, but I can tell you Office 2012 is the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division,” wrote P.J. Hough, the executive who leads the Office division. “With Office 2012, for the first time ever, we will simultaneously update our cloud services, servers, and mobile and PC clients for Office, Office 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Project, and Visio.” Read more »

We can’t go into the details yet, as they have to be kept under wraps until Thursday, but we can say that on Thursday Alfresco will be releasing what Todd Barr, CMO at Alfresco, told us is going to be a really significant release.

We’ve had a preview of Enterprise 4 and it does look extremely cool. From the Alfresco website itself, we can say that it takes document editing firmly into the mobile space as well as offering the possibility to: Read more »

No Metro Design for Microsoft Office 2012 on Windows 8?

Office 2012 will be Windows 8 friendly, but its individual apps will not be designed with the Metro sleekness.

ZoomOn the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that the “Office 2012″ Technical Preview Program had begun, a new report (rumor) has surfaced stemming from “Microsoft insiders” who claim the suite won’t be built for the Metro-style interface using the new WinRT programming model. Instead, it will receive interface tweaks to make it more touch friendly within the Windows 8 environment.

Plans to create a true Metro style Windows 8 version of Office 2012 have reportedly been pushed back. The reason is that the team would need to completely overhaul the suite to take advantage of WinRT. That means an additional amount of time, thus pushing the Office 2012 release back. Instead of a product delay, Microsoft will likely return to the Metro-themed version once the retail product hits the market. Read more »

Windows 8, Office 2012 Getting Metro UI?

By admin, March 27, 2011

Microsoft’s “Aero Lite” interface for Windows 8 will supposedly feature elements from its Metro UI used in Media Center, WP7.

ZoomBack in December, a rumor surfaced in regards to Windows 8 and the existence of two separate interfaces. These will reportedly coexist in the same way Basic and Aero currently reside in Windows 7.

For Windows 8, one interface codenamed “Wind” will be fully 3D, requiring around 170 MB of dedicated video memory. It will also be “fully dynamic” by adapting to the user’s habits. This includes the ability to speed up daily tasks by changing shortcuts and icons to fit within different usage scenarios. “Wind” will reside in all copies of Windows 8, but remain inactive within the 32-bit environment.
